NCLB Definitions
- Highly Qualified Teacher (HQT): The teacher has a BA, is certified to teach in California, and has met subject matter competence in every core academic subject area they teach.
- Core Academic Subject Areas: English, Reading/Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Foreign Languages, Civics/Government, Economics, Arts, History, and Geography
- New to the Profession: Holds a Credential or Intern Certificate dated on or after July 1, 2002.
- HOUSSE: High Objective Uniform State Standard Evaluation. A process for "Not New" teachers to meet the HQT requirements.
- Elementary School or Middle/Secondary School: Districts may designate an entire school, grade level, or course at a school as elementary or secondary based on curriculum taught.
